NARRE Warren South Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) students have raised $3000 for charity.
Since 2006, the students have supported a range of charities and causes, totalling $22,000 worth of donations.
This year, the students ran a primary school footy day, crazy hair day and a benefit concert, with a total of $3000 raised at the events.
On Thursday 7 October, cheques for these amounts were presented to the Starlight Foundation and young Tyler Fishlock, who has overcome the loss of both eyes to a rare cancer, retinoblastoma.
The college has supported Tyler since 2006, raising a total of $9500 in that time to assist with his education expenses.
Student Ashlee Leitch said it was a great opportunity to work together to achieve a “really good outcome”. “VCAL has given us the opportunity to learn about those less fortunate, or who do good work in our community, and to actually do something meaningful to support them,” she said.
“We were able to get some really good sponsors and a lot of local businesses who supported us with these events and it is great to be able to do something for others”.
Assistant principal Rob Duncan applauded the students and staff efforts.
“They are to be congratulated on their achievement,” he said.
“They have worked hard to ensure the success of their projects and they have once again made a major contribution to their community.”
