Kitchen burns in fryer fire

By Kelly Yates
A KITCHEN fire in Narre Warren is believed to have been caused by a chips pan that caught fire.
Firefighters from the Narre Warren fire brigade were called to the Centre Road house at 7.30pm on 22 September after receiving a triple-zero call from the owners.
Incident controller second lieutenant Travis Carter said that when firemen arrived at the house it was “heavily smoke-logged” and the kitchen area was “well alight”.
Lieutenant Carter said the crews used breathing apparatus to enter the house and quickly “knocked down” the fire.
A crew from the Berwick fire brigade assisted the Narre Warren crews in ventilating the rest of the house.
Lieutenant Carter said the residents tried to put out the fire but were beaten back by the intense heat and smoke.
“Despite the damage to the kitchen, the crews made a great save in limiting the fire to a single area,” he said.
“A few minutes longer and the fire could have spread to the rest of the house. It was only the quick actions of the residents and the fact that they had working smoke alarms that meant we got the call early on.”
