A CRANBOURNE school community is calling for extra crossings to prevent students from tackling the roads alone.
Cranbourne Carlisle Primary School council president Arbup Peters said he would like to see an additional three crossings to help protect the school’s growing student population.
At the moment there is one crossing on Silky Oak Drive, but Mr Peters said it often left the students no better off because they still needed to cross several other small roads by themselves.
“We just don’t want them darting in between cars,” Mr Peters said.
“We’ve had near misses and that’s a concern.”
Mr Peters said it would be great to see the extra crossings on Springhill Drive and Majestic Boulevard before it was too late.
There are about 200 students at Cranbourne Carlisle Primary School, and staff are expecting an extra 100 students to commence next year.
A new kindergarten and retail development are also expected to increase traffic.
“Within the next two years we’ll be at capacity at the school.”
Casey councillor Amanda Stapledon said further advocacy was needed for funding for more school crossing supervisors and the reinstatement of the walking bus.
“It is imperative that the safety of our children is first and foremost in our minds,” Cr Stapledon said.
Casey council officers will meet with the school to discuss their concerns.
