CITY of Casey Council joined forces with local tennis clubs to serve up a week of free tennis activities as part of Casey Tennis Week.
The event took place from Sunday 27 January to Sunday 3 February.
Mayor Janet Halsall and deputy mayor Colin Butler were present for the official opening at 10am at the Devon Meadows Tennis Club.
Cr Halsall said the aim of Casey Tennis Week was to introduce the community to local tennis clubs by providing activities free of charge.
Casey manager for arts and leisure Robyn Bowen said the event was held the week after the Australian Open to capture those inspired by the tennis.
“It was a great success with 21 activities being held across 13 clubs,” Ms Bowen said.
Berwick Tennis Club had a women’s day which attracted more than 20 participants.
“Three of the women had never even picked up a tennis racquet before,” she said.
Hampton Park Tennis Club held a family open day which Ms Bowen said was well attended.
“The family open day was very successful with children and their families having a hit of tennis throughout the day.”
While tennis was the main focus, Ms Bowen said the socialising factor was also a draw card for participants.
“Feedback from the clubs has suggested Casey Tennis Week be an annual event on the calendar,” she said.
