THE Narre Warren Chamber of Commerce is “stronger than ever” after a lack of membership last year threatened its survival.
President Bob Burns said that by mid 2008, membership had grown to more than 30 people – 50 per cent higher than ever before.
“We now have a strong committee and the Chamber of Commerce has a life and a future,” Mr Burns said.
He said the chamber had also developed a strong relationship with the City of Casey, benefiting thousands of residents.
“Council passed the motion to implement the Urban Design Framework Plan, which will look at a 30-year view of the Webb Street precinct,” he said.
“We have been in substantial discussion with council over the past 12 months and put through many views to them about the project.
“If the views see the light of day, I am confident that thousands of residents will benefit from better parking facilities, safer environment around the station and bus area. There is also a real potential for that area to redevelop to be the heartland of small businesses.”
Mr Burns said that besides following through with the Urban Design Framework Plan, the Chamber of Commerce’s main focus in 2009 would be to continuously recruit members.
“We want to increase membership and the presence and profile of the chamber,” he said. “Without an effective chamber, small businesses don’t have a voice.”
The executive committee meets every second Tuesday, starting in February. General meetings will be held in February, May, August, and November.
