A CONTRACT worth more than $12 million has been announced to duplicate part of Cardinia Road in Officer, with works set to start in October this year.
Minister for Roads Terry Mulder announced the contract worth $12.63 million that was awarded to Streetworks Pty Ltd to duplicate a section of the road.
The stretch of road goes from Damon Street to just north of the Pakenham rail line.
The developments will include a new intersection with traffic signals at Shearwater Drive and Arena Parade, and will connect Arena Parade to Cardinia Road.
Mr Mulder said the project would help accommodate the increased traffic down the road.
“The duplication will improve traffic flow and safety for road users, and it will be vital in helping to cater for the increased traffic needs associated with growing development in the area,” Mr Mulder said.
“This project is great news for local residents as it will improve the connections between communities and services.”
Member for Gembrook Brad Battin as well as Liberal Candidate for Bass Brian Paynter were there when the announcement was made.
Mr Battin said he welcomed the news.
“Once complete, this project will see two new lanes built in each direction between the Pakenham rail line and the Princes Highway,” Mr Battin said.
“Alongside the duplication of the road, we will also be incorporating a new shared path to meet the needs of pedestrians and cyclists along the west side of Cardinia Road.
“The shared path will improve safety and amenity for cyclists and pedestrians, and improve connectivity to the Cardinia Road railway station.”
Mr Paynter also said what a great addition this would be for the community and a great effort to ensure safer roads.
“This project will deliver a number of benefits to the local community including better connectivity and access to the surrounding estates in one of Melbourne’s fastest growing areas,” Mr Paynter said.
