ONE of the most action-packed sports in the local area is on the lookout for more players, and anyone can join in.
Floorball is easy to learn, but difficult to master.
The Pakenham Squishees floorball club plays its games out of Pakenham’s Cardinia Life gym and a number of its players are national representatives and go on to represent their country on the world stage.
But as club president Gordon Hodges said: “There isn’t a lot of equipment involved – there aren’t any mouthguards, knee pads, shoulder pads or anything like that.
“As long as you have a pair of runners we can put a stick in your hand. That’s pretty much it.”
The Squishees have members ranging from the ages of 10 to 60 with about 150 players involved across their teams.
Floorball is a kind of cross between indoor hockey and ice hockey and is typically played on oversized basketball courts with half-metre high side boards surrounding the playing surface.
It is played with a lightweight ball and sticks, with five players plus a goalkeeper on the floor per team at all times.
While it’s technically a non-contact sport, it is extremely physical and action-packed.
